Closet Decluttering Tips: Simple Tips For A Cozy Closet

Feeling overwhelmed by a cluttered closet? You’re not alone! Many of us hold on to clothes we never wear, creating stress every time we open our doors. The good news: decluttering doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With a cozy, step-by-step approach, you can simplify your wardrobe and create a space you truly love.

This cozy approach walks you through gentle, practical steps to help you learn closet decluttering tips for your wardrobe without the stress or overwhelm. I share more of this in a video-watch the full version on YouTube here.

Step 1: Set The Mood – Make It Feel Cozy

Before you dive in, take a few moments to set the mood. By creating a peaceful environment, you’ll find it much easier to stay focused and motivated. Here are a few ways to help you transform your space before you start.

Step 2: Pull Everything Out To Help Visualize Everything

It’s time to pull everything out. Yes, this means everything! Even the pair of jeans you had hiding in the back corner! This helps you see what you actually have and prevents “out of sight, out of mind” clutter. Lay your items on your bed or a clean surface to visualize your collection.

I have one simple suggestion for you when pulling everything out. Sort as you go. Creating categories like jeans, dresses, or activewear helps you see how much you actually have in each category. It also helps you realize you may have duplicates, making the upcoming “keep or toss” decisions easier.

Tip: This process can take time, and that’s perfectly okay! Take breaks when needed, or pause and return the next day. Celebrating small wins along the way will lift your spirits and make the final result feel even more rewarding.

Step 3: The Keep, Toss, and Maybe Pile

Now that everything is out, it’s time to create 3 sections. This is where you decide what to keep and what will go back in your cozy closet. To keep things organized during this process, I recommend creating three categories.

I have provided the list here:
  • Keep – Focus on the clothes you genuinely love, wear, and feel confident in. These are your absolute favorites.
  • Toss/Donate – This section is for clothes that no longer bring you joy. Think about worn-out clothes, clothing that does not fit, or items you haven’t worn in over a year. Remember, donating gently used clothing is a beautiful way to give to someone else in need.
  • Maybe – We all have the “unsure” items! If you just are not sure about an item – like a pair of jeans – place them here. This also applies to clothes that may not fit. Revisit these at the end of your session. This gives you another chance to decide whether you want to keep, donate, or toss the item. This is also the time to try on clothes if you are not sure about how they may fit you.

Tip: If you find yourself unsure, ask yourself one simple question: “Have I actually worn this in the last year?” If the answer is no, it’s time to declutter and let it go. Remember, we want to make room for the items that truly bring us joy.

Step 4: Ask the Right Questions When Making Decisions

When you find yourself stuck on an item, it helps to ask yourself a few questions. This helps guide you in your decision-making.

To make your decisions easier, try asking these questions:
  • Does it fit me comfortably right now? We often hold on to clothing that may no longer fit us. (Trust me, I have been there!) This causes more stress and clutter. Remember, we want to keep clothing that we feel comfortable in and that truly brings us joy.
  • Do I feel confident wearing it? If you put on an outfit that you haven’t worn in a while and immediately go to change, or it makes you feel self-conscious, then this is a sign that it no longer fits your style. Getting rid of these helps make room for items that will bring us joy.
  • Does it align with my current style and lifestyle? Our lives go through seasons of change. Maybe you have clothing that no longer fits your current lifestyle. If so, it’s okay to let them go!

By asking these simple questions, it helps you focus on why I am keeping these, or is it truly time to get rid of them? This helps us to create a wardrobe we truly love.

Step 5: Organize the Keepers You Truly Love

Now comes the fun part of your closet decluttering journey! Now that you have chosen what to keep, it’s time to put your curated, intentionally chosen wardrobe back into your closet. You now get to style and organize your clothes in a way that feels refreshing.

To make getting dressed easy and calm, I recommend organizing them by category and color. For example, start by grouping your tops together. I would also separate short-sleeve tops from long-sleeve tops. Then group your pants in one category while placing your jeans in another. Dresses can go in one category while skirts go in another. These are some examples to help you get the idea of organizing in categories.

Within each category, I would also arrange them by color. I like to go from light to dark – just like the colors of the rainbow. This makes it easy to find what you are looking for quickly and not feel stressed.

Once you decide what to keep and organize your closet, consider donating gently used clothing. Knowing that your clothing went to someone else in need allows you to feel lighter. It also makes your closet feel tidy, cozy, and peaceful.

Remember, decluttering and organizing don’t have to be overwhelming. Even small steps can make a big difference in turning your home into a cozy sanctuary.

Celebrate Your Progress With Your Beautiful Closet

Yay! You did it! It’s time to celebrate your beautiful sanctuary. You decluttered your closet, and now you get to enjoy the calm and peace. When you walk into your closet, everything is beautifully arranged. You will be able to find that next outfit with ease. You have made room for what you truly enjoy!

Remember, bringing in calm and peace is about removing the items you no longer enjoy to make room for items you truly enjoy! This is what a calm and peaceful journey is all about.
