Let’s be honest. Learning how to declutter can feel overwhelming. You want a calm, peaceful home, but staring at a pile of stuff makes you feel stressed. You don’t know how to start or where to begin. If that sounds familiar, you’re in the right place!
This cozy guide walks through gentle, practical steps to help you learn how to declutter without fear, mess, or stress. I share more of this in a video-watch the full version on YouTube here.
Why Overwhelm Happens and How to Feel Better
When our spaces are cluttered, our minds can feel cluttered too. Emotional attachments, indecision, and not knowing where to start are all totally normal. The key is to begin with small, intentional steps so you don’t burn out before you begin. Remember, small steps will lead to big wins.

Let’s walk through some easy steps on how to declutter and make your space feel lighter and more peaceful.
Step 1: Choose your Space
It could be;
- A cluttered drawer-like kitchen utensils or junk drawer
- A kitchen counter or desktop
- A cozy corner or section of your closet
Just start with a small space. Each small win adds up, and soon you’ll feel the joy of a decluttered space.
Step 2: Set a Cozy Mood
Before you touch a single item, set a calming atmosphere:
- Brew a warm coffee or latte
- Light a candle or turn on a diffuser
- Turn on gentle music or your favorite podcast.
Make your decluttering feel like self‑care, not a chore.
Step 3: Use the Simple 3‑Step Declutter Method
This method makes decisions easier and keeps you moving:
1- Keep
Choose to keep items you use regularly and that bring you joy.
2- Unsure
Things you’re not sure about. It’s OK. Place them together and revisit them later.
3- Donate / Toss / Sell
Items you haven’t used or worn in a long time
It’s time to donate gently used items or toss the worn or damaged ones. You could also sell them if they are in good condition.
Here’s a simple tip: If you have duplicates, such as 5 spatulas or 20 pairs of jeans. Keep the ones you use the most and donate or toss the others. This will simplify your utensil drawer and keep things easy to find.
This approach helps you make decisions without getting stuck.
Step 4: Declutter in Short Sessions
Large decluttering projects can feel impossible or overwhelming. Instead:
- Work in 15–30 minute time blocks
- Take breaks – sit down and enjoy your coffee or latte
- And remember- Celebrate small wins!
This keeps overwhelm at bay and keeps motivation high. You will also begin to see the rewards soon!
Step 5: Make The Space Easy to Maintain
Once you’ve decluttered and pared down:
- Assign a home for each item. This makes it easier to place the item where it goes.
- Label baskets or bins. Your family and kids can see exactly where things go, especially the pantry.
- Return things to their place each day. This keeps things organized and back in their home.
These maintenance steps prevent clutter from creeping back into your cozy space.

I’ve learned that a peaceful home isn’t about having less just because—it’s about making room for what matters most and what truly brings joy.
